Good to Go: Napa’s Top Takeaway Food Spots

A trio of Napa spots marries high-end food with grab-and-go convenience.

In an area lauded for its world-class restaurants and top-notch wineries, some epicurean enterprises are elevating grab-and-go fare into an art form—no reservations required. Here are three Napa County destinations dishing out fast-casual food to take along on your Wine Country adventures.

The Station

At his fast-casual Gott’s Roadside outposts, cofounder and winemaker Joel Gott has long promoted the use of elevated ingredients in comfort-food classics. But with the September opening of the Station in St. Helena, he’s made it even easier to get from-scratch eats on the go. Housed in a former gas station (hence the name), the café doles out fresh-baked pastries (including banana bread laced with house-made chocolate-hazelnut spread), hearty sandwiches, and espresso drinks from a windowed food counter. The hybrid indoor-outdoor space features a back patio with benches, umbrellas, and heat lamps to keep visitors toasty in the colder months. Addendum

Known for his Michelin-starred fine-dining juggernauts, Thomas Keller opened Addendum around the back of his restaurant Ad Hoc in 2011 as casual entry point into his ingredient-driven fare, and it’s since evolved into a destination of its own. Step up to the carry-out window Thursday through Saturday, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., for boxed lunches featuring barbecue ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, or the highly recommended buttermilk fried chicken with two daily changing sides, which you can savor on the run or in Addendum’s garden. Place an order online to skip the queue (and the likelihood of a sellout). Gary’s Wine and Marketplace

While both the Station and Addendum prioritize well-executed fast-casual eats, the new Gary’s Wine and Marketplace puts the focus on consumable retail options. Having occupied the former Dean and DeLuca space since October, Gary’s features not only a café, deli, and cheese counter with more than 200 cheeses but also upward of 700 bottles of wine, including the area’s largest and most diverse selection of imports. The shop sells food-related homewares and unexpected gifts, too. If you’re taking a bottle (or two) to go, pick up an insulated wine clutch, which looks like a purse but can stash a standard-size bottle of wine.
